For students interested in wildlife epidemiology

The University of Calgary is opening a new veterinary school, with a "population medicine" stream:

  • Population Medicine: Public Health, Eco-Health and Zoological Medicine: This stream will focus on veterinary practice and research as it relates to wildlife conservation and management. Graduates of this program will enter veterinary practice in wildlife management organizations, zoos, or related research institutions.
I'm not saying that you have to go to vet school to have a career in wildlife diseases (I sure didn't!), but this program does seem pretty exciting.

It sounds like a pretty cool program, Tufts has its international veterinary and wildlife focus but this seems even more focused, having said that I am heading that way with a PhD in epidemiology, and jobs now want at least a masters, maybe a PhD or residency post vet school so maybe this is a little too focused? Large and small animal internal medicine and field techniques are all very applicable to wildlife work and a good solid basis in these veterinary foundations is necessary even for those entering into wildlife/conservation medicine, especially since health concerns at the interface of human, wildlife, and livestock/domestic animal populations is where disease emergence occurs. Also, issues like village health in many areas where we work on wildlife health require the ability to also consider dog, cat and livestock diseases and health.
